Frequently Asked Questions
How do I know if tutoring is the right fit for my child?
If your child is feeling frustrated, avoiding reading or math, falling behind, or you are simply tired of nightly battles, tutoring can help. Tutoring is also a great fit for students who are doing “fine” but could thrive with the right challenge, confidence-building, and skill-building plan.
How many sessions per week does my child need?
Most students grow best with 1–2 sessions per week.

-
1 session per week: Great for steady support, confidence, and maintaining skills
-
2 sessions per week: Best for faster progress, closing gaps, or intensive reading support
-
Short-term boost: A temporary 2x/week plan can work well during a tough unit or when rebuilding a foundation
If you want a clear recommendation, I can help you choose a plan after a quick consult.
How long are sessions?
Most families choose 30, 45, or 60 minutes depending on your child’s age, attention stamina, and goals. Many K–2 students do best with shorter sessions. Older students often benefit from 45–60 minutes.
What if my child needs a challenge? Can you help with enrichment?
Yes. I love working with students who are ready for more.
Enrichment can include:
-
advanced reading comprehension and vocabulary
-
writing support and stronger sentence structure
-
math reasoning, problem solving, and deeper conceptual understanding
-
extending grade-level standards so your child stays engaged and growing
What grades and subjects do you support?
I support K–6 students, primarily in:

-
Reading (phonics, fluency, comprehension, spelling, writing support)
-
Math (conceptual understanding, fact fluency, problem solving)

If you are not sure whether your child’s needs fit, ask anyway. I’ll tell you honestly.
What makes your tutoring different?
I’m not only a tutor, I’m a licensed educator and school administrator, which brings a level of expertise and insight you don’t typically find in tutoring businesses. I use the word tutor because it’s familiar, but what I really provide is private education that is:

-
Highly personalized: one child, one plan
-
Research-based and skill-specific: we target the exact sub-skills your child needs to grow
-
Rooted in real school experience: I understand standards, classroom expectations, and how to support learners who are behind or ready to be challenged
-
Confidence-building: your child will feel capable, supported, and proud of their progress
How do you figure out what my child needs?
We start with a short intake and a skills snapshot, then I build a plan that targets the specific subskills holding your child back (or the areas that will stretch them next). You’ll always know what we are working on and why.
How soon will we see progress?
Many families notice a confidence shift quickly, sometimes within the first few sessions. Skill growth depends on the starting point, consistency, and the type of need.
I focus on real, lasting growth, which means we build strong foundations instead of rushing.
How will I know what my child is improving?
You will get regular updates, including:
-
what we worked on
-
what your child is mastering
-
what’s next
I also use progress monitoring when appropriate so we can clearly see growth over time.
Where do sessions take place?
Sessions can be in-person or online.
In-person options include:
-
a local library
Do you work with students with dyslexia or reading challenges?
Yes. I support many students who struggle with decoding, spelling, fluency, and confidence in reading. If your child has a diagnosis, is in the evaluation process, or you simply have concerns, we can create a plan that supports their needs.
Can you help if my child has ADHD or struggles with focus?
Yes. Sessions are structured, supportive, and designed with attention and engagement in mind. We use routines, movement when needed, and clear goals so your child can experience success without feeling overwhelmed.
Do you work with homeschool families?
Absolutely. I can support:
-
skills instruction and intervention
-
pacing and planning
-
confidence-building and accountability
-
choosing materials that match your child’s learning profile
